“The Respectable Fraud”

  • November 30, 2009 at 8:52 pm

This past weekend at Southeast Christian Church, Dave Stone continued the sermon sermon series entitled, “The Pretenders” with the fourth sermon of the series, “The Respectable Fraud” based on Matthew 23.

Imposter, deceiver, cheater, pretender, actor …  “The Respectable Fraud” is a person who is highly respected but he has everyone deceived. On the outside “The Respectable Fraud” appears to do and say the right things but on the inside he is a different person. His life is not the way that it appears.

As a Christian we must be authentic — you see what you get.  Christian authenticity is not about being yourself but rather dying to yourself. Take an introspective look into your life and see where you stand. Are you authentic or are you the pretender?

Shoes in Church

  • November 29, 2009 at 8:00 pm

How often do we judge others without knowing the circumstances? It’s easy to judge someone and form our own opinion without knowing the whole story. Do you ever hesitate to greet someone who does not quite fit your standards? Even though we all know that we should never judge someone who does not look like us, we sometimes avoid those situations. Others may not be as fortunate as you but that does not make them any less of a person. Yet if we are not careful, we find ourselves doing just that.  God tells us to treat others as we want to be treated.

This is an email that I received and I wanted to share it with my readers. The author of this email is unknown. I hope it  makes you stop and think before forming an opinion about others. We should all be thankful for our many blessings, but we should also treat others respectfully as we would want to be treated. If you were in a similar situation,  wouldn’t you want someone to welcome you? Pray that God will reveal situations to you and help you to be obedient to Him.

Shoes in Church

I showered and shaved……………. I adjusted my tie.

I got there and sat………… In a pew just in time.

Bowing my head in prayer………. As I closed my eyes..

I saw the shoe of the man next to me…… Touching my own. I sighed.

With plenty of room on either side……. I thought, ‘Why must our soles touch?’

It bothered me, his shoe touching mine… But it didn’t bother him much.

A prayer began: ‘Our Father’…………. I thought, ‘This man with the shoes, has no pride.

They’re dusty, worn, and scratched. Even worse, there are holes on the side!’

‘Thank You for blessings,’ the prayer went on.

The shoe man said…………… A quiet ‘Amen.’

I tried to focus on the prayer……. But my thoughts were on his shoes again.

Aren’t we supposed to look our best. When walking through that door?

‘Well, this certainly isn’t it,’ I thought, Glancing toward the floor.

Then the prayer was ended………… And the songs of praise began.

The shoe man was certainly loud……. Sounding proud as he sang.

His voice lifted the rafters………. His hands were raised high.

The Lord could surely hear. The shoe man’s voice from the sky.

It was time for the offering……. And what I threw in was steep.

I watched as the shoe man reached…. Into his pockets so deep.

I saw what was pulled out………. What the shoe man put in.

Then I heard a soft ‘clink’. As when silver hits tin.

The sermon really bored me……… To tears, and that’s no lie.

It was the same for the shoe man… For tears fell from his eyes.

At the end of the service…… As is the custom here.

We must greet new visitors, And show them all good cheer..

But I felt moved somehow…………… And wanted to meet the shoe man.

So after the closing prayer………. I reached over and shook his hand.

He was old and his skin was dark….. And his hair was truly a mess.

But I thanked him for coming………. For being our guest.

He said, ‘My names’ Charlie………… I’m glad to meet you, my friend.’

There were tears in his eyes…… But he had a large, wide grin.

‘Let me explain,’ he said………. Wiping tears from his eyes.

‘I’ve been coming here for months…. And you’re the first to say ‘Hi.”

‘I know that my appearance……….’Is not like all the rest.

‘But I really do try………………..’To always look my best.’

‘I always clean and polish my shoes..’Before my very long walk.

‘But by the time I get here………’They’re dirty and dusty, like chalk.’

My heart filled with pain……….. And I swallowed to hide my tears.

As he continued to apologize……… For daring to sit so near

He said, ‘When I get here………..’I know I must look a sight.

‘But I thought if I could touch you..’Then maybe our souls might unite’

I was silent for a moment………… Knowing whatever was said

Would pale in comparison… I spoke from my heart, not my head.

‘Oh, you’ve touched me,’ I said……’And taught me, in part;

‘That the best of any man………….’Is what is found in his heart.’

The rest, I thought,…………….. This shoe man will never know.

Like just how thankful I really am… That his dirty old shoe touched my soul

You are special to me and you have made a difference in my life.

I respect you, and truly cherish you.

For I Am Fearfully and Wonderfully Made . . .

For I am Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Even though I am not familiar with this children’s song, I love the lyrics to the song. For children to sing this song and to learn to believe that they are fearfully and wonderfully made by God is amazing. God spoke the rest of creation, but man he created using His own hands.

For I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

For I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

God made me specially; yes, very carefully,

For I am fearfully and wonderfully made!

When God made the fish, He said and it was so.

When God made the birds, He said and it was so.

But when it came to making man,

He formed him with His hands,

For I am fearfully and wonderfully made!

Path of My Performance

My Path vs. God’s Path

Have you ever thought about your daily life and the things about your daily life especially those dealing with food choices? Many times we make ungodly choices when we are stressed, we feel sorry for ourselves, or we feel like we deserve it.  Sometimes I find myself not listening to God as I rebell against the godly choice that I know I should be making.

When we do not rely on God, we find that our weight loss is based on our performance. We either feel good about ourselves because we lost weight or we feel sorry for ourselves because we did not lose weight. We find ourselves either trying harder or eventually giving up. We tend to follow rigid diet rules for a while and then eventually grant ourselves a license to eat whatever we want. Once we indulge in a delicious hot fudge sundae, we tend to feel guilty and if we are not careful we will continue on the path towards self-destruction.

We already know the truth about our eating. We are only deceiving ourselves. If we are in denial about our eating choices, we are only keeping us from moving forward on our weight loss journey. So, why not accept God’s grace now. God already knows the truth yet He does not withdraw His love from us when we make ungodly choices.  His grace is available for us to accept now. Let God help you on your weight loss journey.

Thin Within Video — 3b

The Scales

Pam Sneed shares another video with her thoughts on weight loss and God that may help you embrace this grace-based approach to lasting weight loss. Pam released 100 pounds using the principles taught by Thin Within. Pam relates a story about the bath scales that many of us may share. Personally, I use the scales as a guide for myself and I never associate the results with rewarding myself or eating because I was discouraged. If you use the scales as a means to eat, then it is best to put them aside at least for awhile.

Relying on God

By relying on God for our food issues throughout our Thin Within journey, it  will lead to you  to including God in all areas of our lives and relying on Him for other things as well. God wants us to live the abundant life which is depending upon God moment by moment all day long. Thin Within will help to lead you to this abundant life as you learn to seek Him throughout the day for your food struggles.Rely on God and seek to make the choices that God would have you to make.

“The Religious Bully”

  • November 23, 2009 at 8:09 pm

This past weekend at Southeast Christian Church, Kyle Idleman continued the sermon sermon series entitled, “The Pretenders” with the third sermon of the series,Religious Bullybased on Matthew 23.

Kyle begins with a quote from Ghandi, “I like your Christ but I don’t like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” When I think about this statement, it makes me sad — sad that because we don’t always say and do the things that Jesus would do. Sometimes as Christians we get caught up in the legalism rather than loving the person.  We care more about pleasing God by obeying all the rules. We become a religious bully. Jesus dealt with religious bullies by confronting them and setting them straight.

Religious bullies make it hard for people to come to God. There are too many rules to follow and too much to do.  Religious bullies lead people down the wrong path. Religious leaders make rules more important than relationships. The leaders often miss what matters most. Listen Kyle’s sermon now as he talks about religious bullies.

Matthew 6:25-33

Do Not Worry

Matthew 6:25-33

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 28 “Andy why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Worry according to dictionary.com is to torment oneself with or suffer from disturbing thoughts, cares, or anxieties. So often we find our lives filled with disturbing thoughts and we are overcome with anxiety and worry. We worry about what to wear, what to eat, what is going to happen, what if … and many more. We can let worry overtake us and take control of our lives if we allow it.It can overwhelm you and destroy the peace, joy, and contentment that you should have present in your life.

God commands us not to worry. He tells us that we should not worry about anything. Worry cannot change any given  situation. Therefore, what is the point in worrying? Instead, rely on God and ask that His will be done. Then put your worries and cares in God’s hands and trust Him. We know that God has a purpose and a plan for each of us. Sometimes it is difficult to turn our lives over to Him. But when we hold on to our worries, it only dominates our lives. Let God give you peace and contentment about the situation.

Worry doesn’t change anything.

Prayer can change your life.

Let prayer change your life today!!!

Jesus Loves Me, This I Know — a Hymn Meditation

  • November 21, 2009 at 3:00 pm

A Favorite Hymn Then & Now

As a child, I sang this children’s hymn many times. The first verse was permanently etched in my mind as a child. Even though this is a child’s hymn, its message is so pertinent to remember each and every day. When you feel unloved, know that Jesus still loves you unconditionally. We are told this in the Bible and this song reminds us of His constant love. Even though we may be weak, through Jesus strength we can be made strong if we just rely on Him. It should be our prayer each day to give our hearts to Jesus and ask Him to keep us pure and wholly His throughout the day. Yes, I love Jesus!

Jesus Loves Me, This I Know

Jesus loves me, this I know,

For the Bible tells me so;

Little ones to Him belong;

They are weak, but He is strong.

Yes, Jesus loves me,

Yes, Jesus loves me,

Yes, Jesus loves me,

The Bible tells me so.

Jesus, take this heart of mine;

Make it pure and wholly Thine.

Thou hast bled and died for me;

I will live henceforth for Thee.

Yes, I love Jesus.

Yes, I love Jesus.

Yes, I love Jesus.

In prayer I tell Him so.
